As a society, we a lot see things that be contrasted to our ways and automatically jump to consider these ways to be odd, different, or wrong, just because they dont fit our banausic interpretation of the way things should be. However, early Roman societys ways were non just different, just now they were harsh and rigid, and to me, sometimes cruel. This is not just an opinion, precisely a fact. The statement is not just a criticism, its the truth. Then again, the Romans could say the same of our ancestors. To each his own. Romes belief in family was that it was the substance and foundation of the state. This creates a picture of a loving, caring family that is do above all other priorities. However, the nurturing of this belief was not hugs and kisses, but little love at all. The best example of this is in the case of children. Society needed laborers, hard workers, and that is what children were molded into, which couldnt be done through tender loving care. Instead, t he strongest children were desired, weaklings ofttimes murdered as newborns at the judgment of the paterfamilias, who were the masters of the household. Females were a lot such victims because of the way they were viewed in society. For, women were seen as dependents on the men- fathers, husbands, guardians, plainly a woman could not live without them. Also, women had little freedoms, for example, they couldnt buy or sell property without permission. So it is an incontestible conclusion that the family structure and ways of early Romans does not ascertain the families of the present, or those to which we are accustomed. No, they were as harsh and rigid as can be, meant to weed out the weak and ruthlessly so, as if without conscience. Of course, an extension of the family and its ways are also its value.
